In Mexico violence is endemic. Corruption has led to collusion between the police and the military and organised crime. In the states of Chiapas, Guerrero and Morelos different sides have opposing interests. A slumbering conflict situation and militarisation is the result. There are widespread human rights violations, especially among the native population.

Our approach

Mensen met een Missie wants to contribute to the peace efforts and prevent the escalation of social conflicts in Chiapas, Guerrero and Morelos. Workshops are given with the aim of strengthening the capacities of people, local organisations and native communities. By being active within networks they can stand up for their own individual and collective rights and improve their inferior position within Mexican society. This is supported by the local media and by using social media.

Results

Our efforts have led to organisation building among young people, women and men. They have taken initiatives within their communities to improve living conditions and they have learnt to deal more efficiently with conflicts among and between the native communities. As a result smouldering conflicts get nipped in the bud and human rights violations are decreasing. In several communities women have reached higher positions and now exercise leadership roles within organisations. A great number of media messages have been produced and the visibility of the problems in the various states has been improved. We also contribute to the international attention for Mexico.
