International Women’s Day 2025: Accelerate action for gender equality

Back to overview

On March 8th, International Women’s Day, we honor the strength and resilience of women who break barriers and fight against inequality. This year, #IWD2025 focuses on #AccelerateAction: speeding up the fight for gender equality and eliminating bias, stereotypes, and discrimination. At Mensen met een Missie, we work daily with women who do exactly that—dedicating themselves to a world where women can live freely and equally.

Carmen from Bolivia – from survivor to support system

In a country where 7 out of 10 women experience violence, Carmen Rosa Quelali refuses to accept the status quo. Having been a victim herself, she now dedicates her life to helping other women process their trauma and build a safe future. “They can confide in me. I assist them in filing reports, mediation, and ensuring their safety.” Her work contributes to a Bolivia where women are seen as equal and in which violence isn’t seen as normal anymore.

Iweng from Indonesia – a shield against human trafficking

Labor migration in Indonesia carries enormous risks for women, who often fall prey to human trafficking. Iweng, who has faced these dangers herself, now uses her knowledge to protect others. She organizes awareness sessions and provides support to victims. Thanks to her determination, more and more women learn how to stay safe and take control of their own futures.

Lina from Uganda – fighting against inequality

In Uganda, women are still systematically excluded from education and decision-making, amongst other things. But Lina Zedriga is fighting back. As a lawyer and activist, she trains both men and women in equality and non-violent communication. Her mission? To dismantle gender inequality and empower women with the voices they deserve.

Women of Faith – religious leaders driving change

All over the world, female religious leaders are advocating for gender equality and strengthening women’s rights within their communities. The Women of Faith build bridges between communities, civil society organizations, and governments to challenge harmful beliefs, give women a voice, and create inclusive policies. One such leader is Nageeba Hassan Tegulwa from Uganda, who has established a network of female leaders actively involved in policymaking and advocating for equal rights within religious institutions. Thanks to her efforts, and those of other Women of Faith, women are gaining influence in structures that have excluded them for centuries. These women show that religion and equality can go hand in hand and that collaboration is the key to sustainable change.

What you can do

This year’s theme—#AccelerateAction—reminds us that we have no time to lose. These women, and many others, prove that change is possible, but they cannot do it alone. By raising awareness, breaking down stereotypes, and actively supporting gender equality, we can accelerate the journey toward a fair and inclusive world.

Together, we make a difference.
