Social media has become one of the most influential places where people form opinions about social and political issues. Every day, millions of conversations unfold online. These spaces can deepen divisions, spread misinformation, and amplify hostility. But they can also do something else: bring people together, spark meaningful dialogue, and create moments of understanding between people who might never meet offline.
The Strategic Social Media Use for Depolarization Facilitation Guide explores how everyday social media users can help shift the tone of online conversations. Instead of escalating conflict, individuals can contribute to more respectful, constructive, and humanizing dialogue in digital spaces.
The guide was developed as part of the #Harmony project, a collaboration between Utrecht University and Mensen met een Missie, supported by the Templeton World Charity Foundation. The project explores how social media dynamics contribute to polarization and how these same platforms can also be used to counter harmful divisions and strengthen social cohesion.
Drawing on research conducted in India, Indonesia, and Iraq, the project studied how influential content creators and active social media users navigate polarized online environments. Their experiences provide practical insights into how individuals can respond to online hostility, challenge harmful narratives, and promote more constructive engagement.
Rather than focusing on large campaigns, the guide highlights the power of small, everyday actions. By sharing balanced information, amplifying diverse perspectives, and telling stories that emphasize shared humanity, social media users can help reduce harmful divisions and encourage respectful dialogue online.
The guide can be used by trainers, civil society organizations, youth groups, and individuals interested in promoting social cohesion and strengthening constructive communication in digital spaces.
